Thematic Research Lines
Our main research lines of action
TRL 1 - Biomonitoring Environmental Contamination
Evaluation of the presence of anthropogenic origin in different environmental biotic and abiotic compartments, as well as of its bioavailability and bioaccumulation throughout the trophic webs.
TRL 2 - Ecotoxicology & Biomarkers
Evaluation of the physiological and biochemical impacts of the exposure of a certain organism to a legacy or emerging contaminant through the application of classical and novel biomarker analysis. Development of robust chemometric approaches for biomarker integration.
TRL 3 - Food Safety, Nutritional Valuation and Traceability
Evaluation of food products safety in terms of contaminants, food valuation according to the product nutritional value (for e.g. calories, fatty acid and amino acid profiles, vitamins, sugars and protein contents). Application of biochemical and molecular features as food provenance, authenticity and production method biomarkers.
TRL 4 - Marine Microbiology, Blue and Green Biotechnology
Application of marine microbes as potential biotechnological tools for bioremediation, agricultural improvement and as sources of bioactive compounds. Metagenomic bioprospection of ocean microbes.
TRL 5 - Ecosystem Restoration
Development of Nature Based Solutions (NBS) for Ecosystem Restoration of salt marshes and seagrass prairies, namely by reestablishment of native species or by the removal of invasive species.
